How much to hire a campervan?

COVID-19 has meant that many of us have rediscovered the joys of the staycation, exploring new and exciting parts of our very own country. This has seen a surge in people renting a motorhome and opting for a road trip. Here's everything you need to know about the cost of renting a campervan, including the additional costs that you may not have thought to factor in.

How much to hire a campervan?

The cost of motorhome rental can vary depending on the model you choose and the duration of your hire. Just as with any type of holiday booking, there are options to suit all budgets. Smaller groups can get VW campervan hire from just £480, while a family of up to 7 can get the TLL Trooper motorhome from just £945.

Fully comp insurance for one driver, gas tank, bike racks, a kitchen kit (cutlery, pots, plates, etc) and car parking are all included in your Thompson Leisure campervan hire

Don't forget the additional costs

Now that you've found your perfect motorhome, the budget planning doesn't end there. There are other additional costs that you'll run into on your campervan holiday, so be sure to factor each of these into your plan.

Fuel costs

Of course, fuel is one of the main costs of any campervan holiday. These costs will vary dramatically depending on how much of a road trip you are planning on taking, and will increase significantly if you're planning on taking a trip overseas. Thoroughly planning out your route online ahead of time will enable you to work out an accurate cost of how much you'll need to set aside for fuel, so you're never caught short.

Camp sites

You may have sorted out your living quarters, but you'll still need to budget for the costs of your overnight stays at campsites. Again, the costs of these will vary depending on the facilities at the site, but there are options to cater for all budgets. It's important to point out that while most campsites have campervan spaces, these spots can be limited so it's always best to book in advance where possible.
CampingNI is a great resource as well. Before you set out to explore Northern Ireland, make sure to visit the CampingNI to see if there are any discounts available along your travel route. Make sure to apply any of the discount codes available at Thompson Leisure and save.

Toll roads

Depending on where you are travelling, you may encounter toll roads. When planning out your route, be sure to check for these and ensure you've got some cash in the van to pay for them.
As there aren’t many toll roads in Northern Ireland, planning to pay is not much of an issue but if you plan on travelling to the Republic of Ireland and beyond, Thompson Leisure offers an eToll tracker as an add-on so you don’t have to worry about any unexpected tolls. If you’re interested, ask one of our staff for more details.

Food and drink

This can be as affordable or fancy as you'd like! Your campervan comes complete with kitchen facilities and dinnerware, so pop to your local supermarket at the start of your trip and pick up your favourite foods for a purse-friendly option.
Activities and entertainment

Again, how much you spend on extra activities is totally up to you. If you are looking to keep costs down, remember that your holiday is what you make it. Enjoying time around the campsite can be just as much fun as days out.
