Our 3 Tips when buying your First Motorhome!

Purchasing your first motorhome is a landmark moment for an individual or family. It opens an entire world of adventure!

At Thompson Leisure, we understand it can be a daunting process and you will have a lot of questions. With so many brands to choose from and different layouts to consider, where do you start with the decision process?

We offer a vast range of vehicles from Rapido, Burstner, Swift, Elddis, Dreamer, Itineo, Rimor as well as, our own Thompson Camper Car range available.

There are many factors which should be considered during this process when first thinking about purchasing a motorhome. Here at Thompson Leisure, we pride ourselves as a family run company with over 20 years’ experience! Below we have listed our 3 tips when buying your first motorhome! Let our family, help your family!

1.     Layout

Your motorhome will become your safe haven for multiple weeks of each year and will be your vessel to adventure on the road. It is vital the layout is to your liking.

We recommend firstly to consider whether you want fixed or make-up beds. A fixed bed can mean there is useful storage space found underneath.

Once you have decided which sleeping arrangement works best, it is then time to consider the other living areas of the motorhome: sitting area, kitchen and dining areas & bathroom.

Of course, it is a matter of personal preference based on how much time you are likely to spend in each area.

2.     Cost

Before going to look at motorhomes, it’s good to have a rough idea of your budget.

Whether you plan to buy new or used, the cost could vary depending on the vehicles make, model or year.

With a wide selection of motorhomes and campervans, there is something for every budget. Of course, by knowing what price you are working towards, this can save you a lot of hours viewing.

Additionally, we have finance options available for up to 10 years, subject to terms & conditions.

3.     Size

Firstly, once you have decided on your preferred layout, this will often dictate the size of your motorhome. The popular size for motorhomes registered in the UK are 6m- 8m long and 2.05m - 2.35m wide.

Of course, a larger motorhome provides additional space and the advantages are clear. Additionally, you are able to drive a motorhome under 3500kg with a standard UK driving licence.

On the other hand, to purchase a motorhome which weights between 3,500kg – 7,500kg you will need a C1 category licence. The categories you have will depend on when your licence was issued, any medical conditions or what tests you have passed. Take a look at your licence as this will be printed on the back! With regards to size, we advise the driver should always be comfortable driving the motorhome and most importantly, make sure that you have a place large enough to store your motorhome when not in use. This could be your front driveway or an alternative location.

We understand our 3 tips are only a small part of the decision-making process when choosing your first motorhome. Most importantly, enjoy the experience and do not let it become overwhelming.

With the vast range of motorhome and campervans provided at Thompson Leisure, we know there is something out there to suit every taste and every budget!
